Rising temperatures, erratic weather patterns, flooding, drought, pollution and dwindling water supplies have a negative impact on life and the planet. Comics have depicted activists opposing fracking, a method used to extract natural gas and oil from deep rock formations leading to rising water and air pollution (1) while also grappling with disastrous floods in northern England in 2015 (2). Globally, indigenous populations have been disproportionately impacted by climate change, as seen in ‘Let the River Flow Free’ where, in the 1970s, indigenous women of the Cordillera region protested against the building of a dam that would flood their community’s rice fields in favor of oil production (3). We see the 2016 #NoDAPL protests formed at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation and online in opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline, an oil pipeline that would carry crude oil through four states and beneath two major rivers, disrupting sacred indigenous burial grounds and potentially lowering the quality of water in the area (4). Others depict children calling for change due to increasing wildfires (5) and diminishing forest lands in favor of development (6). Even Superman gets in on climate action, leading a School Strike for Climate (7).
