Durante la segunda mitad de la década de los 1960s se intensificó la participación de estudiantes mexico-americanos de preparatoria y universidad en el movimiento chicano. Este activismo estudiantil abrió paso a la formación de grupos estudiantiles, incluyendo a el Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA), Mexican American Youth Association (MAYA), Association of Chicana Activists (AChA), y la Chicano Athletic Association. De hecho muchos de estos grupos juveniles incorporaron ideales del movimiento a sus ideologías. Quizás lo más sobresaliente de todo fue su compromiso con la educación y las acciones que tomaron para ampliar el acceso de los chicanos a la educación superior. Entre los factores claves que avanzaron los estudios superiores de los chicanos en San Diego figura la creación del Chicano Council on Higher Education, el Centro de Estudios Chicanos y los departamentos universitarios de estudios chicanas/os, entre muchas más acciones.

During the second half of the 1960s, Mexican-American high school and college students increasingly participated in the Chicano movement. This student activism led to the formation of SDSU’s Chicana/o student groups, including Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA), Mexican American Youth Association (MAYA), Association of Chicana Activists (AChA), and the Chicano Athletic Association. Many of these groups incorporated ideals from the larger Chicano movement into their ideologies. Perhaps most important among these were student groups’ commitment and contributions to higher education. Key elements in the advancement of higher education for Chicanos in San Diego included the creation of the Chicano Council on Higher Education, the Centro de Estudios Chicanos, and Chicana and Chicano Studies departments, among many others.

Inicialmente, el departamento fue administrado por estudiantes bajo la dirección del Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA). Los estudiantes participaron activamente en reuniones departamentales y tomaron decisiones, enseñaron clases, contrataron y despidieron a facultad y ayudaron a desarrollar el currículo. Sin embargo, en 1975, después del cambio de estatus de San Diego State College a universidad, SDSU incorporó el Mexican American Studies Department al College of Professional Studies. Como resultado de esta institucionalización, los procesos de toma de decisiones se centraron en el personal y la facultad. En 1980, el departamento pasó a formar parte del College of Arts and Letters.

Initially, students from the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA) ran the department. They actively participated in departmental meetings and decisions, taught classes, hired and fired faculty, and helped to develop the curriculum. In 1975, however, following San Diego State College’s change to university status, SDSU incorporated the Mexican American Studies Department into the College of Professional Studies. As a result of this institutionalization, the department’s decision-making processes became faculty- and staff-centered. In 1980, the department became part of the College of Arts and Letters.
